Mr Winston Kim, MBChB, MSc, FRCSGlasg (Tr & Orth), Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
Mr Kim graduated MB ChB from the University of Aberdeen in 1996. He completed higher specialist training in the North West Orthopaedic Rotation in England, obtaining the FRCS(Orth). He underwent further sub-specialist training in Arthroplasty in Vancouver with an Ethicon Foundation Travelling Fellowship Award. He was awarded the British Orthopaedic Foundation Travelling Fellowship visiting the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, and the Hospital of Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City, USA. He was recipient of the PLUS Travel Award to the Radboud University Medical Centre in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. He was a visiting surgeon at the renowned Steadman-Philippon Sports Unit at Vail, Colorado USA. He was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Salford Royal University Hospital June 2006. He is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer in the University of Manchester and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Salford.
The focus of his practice is on arthritic conditions of the hip and knee, particularly early hip and knee arthritis, including conditions arising from hip and knee sporting injuries. He performs hip arthroscopies, “hip preservation surgery”, total hip replacements, (with a large practice of hip replacements in young adults), total knee replacements, (including personalised knee replacements) , knee arthroscopies / key hole knee surgery, partial knee replacements (patellofemoral and medial uni knees), ACL reconstruction, revision total hip replacements and revision total knee replacements. He performs on average over 170 primary and revision (re-do) hip and knee replacements and over 250 key hole (arthroscopic) procedures of the knee and hip a year.
Mr Kim has a strong research background and has authored a large number of peer review publications, review articles and book chapters. He had original research articles published in major peer reviewed journals including The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He has lectured widely in national and international meetings, presenting research findings to national and international meetings such as the British Hip Society, British Orthopaedic Research Society, European Orthopaedic Research Society, British Trauma Society and the British Orthopaedic Association. He has garnered several awards and prizes, including Prizes for Best Basic Science Research (Peter Mallimson Prize, Best Fellow Research Award UBC, Vancouver), Ronald Ravens Barbers Award, Current Concepts Foundation Scholarship and the Sir John Charnley Trust Award.
He was awarded the Harvey Green Surgical Teacher Prize for his contribution to postgraduate teaching. He is the Orthopaedic Lead for undergraduate teaching. He is a member of the British Hip Society (BHS), member of the European Hip Society, member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK) and British Orthopaedic Research Society (BORS).
